Gaddis, John Lewis

John Lewis Gaddis ( born John Lewis Gaddis ; b. 1941 , Texas ) - American historian , a specialist in the Cold War , a nominal professor at Yale University . Pulitzer Prize Winner (2012). National Humanities Medal of the United States (2005).

Biography

He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin , where he received a bachelor's degree (1963) and a master of arts (1965) and in 1968 a Ph.D.

In 1992–93 and 2000–2001. visiting professor at Oxford University . He also taught at the invitation of Princeton University and the University of Helsinki . Since 1997, at Yale University.

Author of many works, including several monographs.

Initially, a supporter of the imposition of responsibility on the USSR for the post-war bipolar division of the world. His views on the root causes of the Cold War have evolved from the initial explanation of the essential role of Stalin to the civilizational confrontation between the Americans and the Russians, who personified respectively the West and the East. The historiosophy of J. L. Gaddis, formulated by him in his philosophical and methodological monograph “The Landscape of History How Historians Map the Pas” (Oxford, 2002) - the movement from chaos to order through the realization or non-realization of certain historical possibilities.
