The New York Knicks (New York Knickerbockers) is an American professional basketball club based in New York . Included in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Holds home games at Madison Square Garden . The official name "Knickerbockers" comes from the name of the pants ( breeches ) worn by Dutch settlers who arrived in America ^[2] . The New York Knicks joined the Basketball Association of America (BAA), the forerunner of the NBA, in 1946 and is one of the oldest teams in the association ^[3] . For all the time, the Knicks only twice became NBA champions - in 1970 and 1973 , when Red Holtzman was the head coach.

From the moment of its foundation until 2016, the club had 28 head coaches ^{[4] [1]} . In the Nyx franchise, Holtzman became the first NBA coach of the year (1969/70) and is the absolute leader in the number of games played and won as a coach in both the regular season and the playoffs ^[5] . In 1986, Holtzman was included in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach ^[5] , and coaches Rick Pitino , Don Nelson , Pat Riley , Lenny Wilkens and Larry Brown were also elected to the Hall. Four Knicks coaches are among the ten greatest coaches in NBA history ^[6] . Neil Kohalan , Joe Lapchik , Vince Borila , Karl Brown , Eddie Donovan and Herb Williams spent the entire career of the NBA head coach in the New York Knicks ^{[7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12]} . Borila, Brown, Harry Gallatin , Dick McGuire , Willis Reed and Williams, before coaching, played for the Knicks as players ^{[13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18]} .
