Geographical position
Wayne is located in the west of the state of West Virginia and is the administrative center of the district of the same name. The city is located near Twelpool Creek River (12 miles before its confluence with the Ohio River ) at the intersection of state roads 37 and 152 [1] . According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Wayne has a total area of 1.86 square kilometers.
History
Wayne was founded in 1842 (simultaneously with the district) by an act of the General Assembly of Virginia in the land of Abraham Troth. The first meeting of the district administration took place on February 24, 1842, in the house of Troth. The first settlers were Hugh Bowen (trader), Kelvin Kiefers (blacksmith), William Mopin (first doctor of the city). Most of the population was engaged in agriculture. At first, the settlement was called Trots Hill. In 1882, the city was incorporated under the name Fairview, it was also often called the district center of Wayne. In 1911, it was decided to accept the name simply Wayne. Both the county and the city were named after the hero of the American Revolution and the Indian War, General Mad Anthony Wayne . Because of its location in the center of the county far from the populated area near Huntington , Wayne remained a small town [1] [2] .
Population
According to the 2010 census, Wayne’s population was 1,413 (of which 45.7% of men and 54.3% of women), there were 635 households and 374 families in the city. The racial composition : whites - 98.2%, African Americans - 0.1%, Native Americans - 0.4%, Asians - 0.4% and representatives of two or more races - 0.8% [3] .
Out of 635 households, 37.2% were married couples living together (14.6% with children under 18), 17.5% of households were women without husbands, 4.3% of households were men without wives, 41, 1% had no family. On average, there are 2.23 households and an average family size of 2.91 people.
According to the 2010 census, the population of the city was distributed as follows: 24.2% - residents under 18 years old, 3.6% - between 18 and 21 years old, 54.5% - from 21 to 65 years old and 17.5% - aged 65 and over. The average age of the population is 38.8 years. For every 100 women in Wayne, there were 84.2 men, while for 100 adult women, there were already 78.2 men of comparable age [3] .
In 2014, out of 1,544 able-bodied residents over 16 years old, 481 people were employed. At the same time, men had a median income of $ 40,000 per year compared to $ 19,063 of average annual income for women. In 2014, the median household income was estimated at $ 29,013, for a household - at $ 19,098. The per capita income is $ 13,202. 34.0% of the total number of families in Wayne and 39.8% of the total population were at the time of the census below the poverty line [3] .

Holy Cross Monastery
The city houses an Orthodox English-speaking monastery of the East American and New York Diocese of the Russian Church Abroad . The abbot and confessor of the monastery is Archimandrite Seraphim. The convent moved from House Springs, Missouri , to Wayne in 2000.
