Alto Baudo ( Spanish: Alto Baudó ) is a city and municipality in the west of the Choco department in northwestern Colombia .

Geography
The municipality is located in the Rio Baudo River Basin. The city is surrounded by tropical jungle. In the forests on the territory of the municipality, Hevea , Santo , cedar, pestilence and other types of plants are found. The local flora also includes orchids. The fauna is represented by mammals, birds and butterflies of almost 150 endemic species. The Baudo Mountain Range is regarded by the authorities as a potential conservation area. Local insects are carriers of malaria, respiratory infections and leishmaniasis.
The center of the municipality is the village of Piedo de Pato, located 50 meters above sea level and 80 kilometers south of the provincial capital - Quibdo. The territory of the municipality is 1,532 square kilometers. The population is 36,773 people, of which more than 70% are people of African descent.
The climate is humid tropical. The average temperature is about + 28 ° C. Precipitation is 6,439 millimeters. Heavy rains and storms lead to periodic destructive floods.
History
The territory of the municipality was inhabited 2,300 years ago by hunters and settled fishermen and plowmen. Before European colonization, the Kunas, Chokoes and Noanamaes tribes lived here.
The first conquistador to reach Choco in 1502 was Rodrigo de Bastidas. His trophies were gold and platinum, for the extraction of which the Europeans began to import African slaves.
The city of Alto Baudo was founded by miners in the second half of the 19th century. In the beginning, it was part of the municipality of Baho Baudo with the administrative center in Pizarro. On January 1, 1959, the city entered the eponymous municipality, founded on November 25, 1958.
