Greco-Roman wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1936 Lightweight Championships (up to 56 kilograms) were held in Berlin from August 6 to 9, 1936 in the German Hall.
The tournament was held according to the system with the accrual of penalty points. No penalty points were awarded for a clean victory, a fighter received one penalty point for a victory in points, two penalty points for a defeat in points 2–1, and three penalty points for a defeat with a score of 3–0. The wrestler who scored five penalty points dropped out of the tournament. The circle in which the number of remaining wrestlers became less than or equal to the number of prizes was declared final, and the wrestlers who reached the final held meetings among themselves. If they have already met in preliminary meetings, such results were read out. The battle according to the tournament regulations lasted 20 minutes.
In the bantamweight 18 participants fought. A clear favorite in this weight was the winner of four of the five previous European championships Herman Tuvesson, but he decided to play in these games only in freestyle wrestling. In the absence of Tuvesson, there was no obvious favorite: Marton Lörinz , European champion in 1934 and vice champion of 1935, could claim a victory, but in freestyle wrestling, Jacob Brendel , reigning Olympic champion in this weight and young wrestlers Egon Svensson and Väinö Perttunen .
Svensson with three penalty points and Lörinz with four points reached the final. Lörinz defeated in this meeting, Svensson took the second place. The third place was taken by Jakob Brendel, who dropped out of the competition with Väinö Perttunen in the previous round with an equal number of penalty points, but Brendel had previously defeated Perttunen in a personal meeting.
