Biography and Activities

Early years

Ivan Morozov was born in 1919 in the Pechora region (then part of Estonia) in the family of a peasant farmer. While studying at the Pechora gymnasium, he became involved in the youth Christian movement (through I. A. Lagovsky ). Morozov later recalled:

Our ideological opponents went to preach communism to the village - we, in turn, began our work among the working and peasant youth in the villages. This work was not an easy one ... Awareness of the need for Orthodox missionary work, which attracted youth to the life of the Church, made us overcome all difficulties. To hold meetings it was necessary to go to the villages, but often returned to the city well after midnight, walking 7-8 km on dirty Russian roads [3] .

In 1938 he came to Paris to receive a theological education, entered the St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute . The accession of Estonia to the USSR separated Morozov from his close relatives - parents, brothers and sister. After graduating from the institute in 1942, he remained in Paris [1] [4] [5] [2]

Church and Publishing

After graduation, Morozov did not follow the path of priesthood , “with the blessing of Fr. Vasily Zenkovsky ”continued to work in the Christian movement . In 1945-1970 he was secretary of the RSHD [1] .

Participated in the post-war revival of the Movement. He was the organizer and participant of the congresses of the RSHD and Orthodox youth in France . In 1950-1970, he led the summer camps of the RSHD. He also led a literary circle at the RSHD, participated in amateur theater performances. Thanks to the participation of Morozov, a permanent theater troupe of the RSHD [1] [2] grew out of amateur performances.

From 1950 to 1969 he was the editor of the journal “ Vestnik RSHD ” (from 1952 - together with N. A. Struve ; until 1962 - with the close participation of Archpriest V.V. Zenkovsky ). Coming out after the war with interruptions, in 1950-1952 the Vestnik began to be issued 5-6 times a year (volume - 32 pages); in 1955 - 4 times a year (volume - 48 s.); since the mid-1960s, the volume and circulation began to increase (one issue per year was double; the volume was 250-300 s.); in the 1970s, 2–4 issues a year were published, the volume of the journal increased two and a half times [6] [5] [7] .

In 1953, when the YMCA international committee transferred its publishing house, which was in a state of decline, to RSHD , Morozov headed it. Soon, the mansion where the publisher rented the premises was put up for sale. Thanks to Morozov, the IMKA-Press publishing house moved to the Latin Quarter , on Montagnes St. Sainte-Genevieve , where it is located to this day [8] .

Since 1961, in parallel with his work at the RSKhD, he taught the history of the Russian church at the Orthodox Theological Institute [9] [2] .

Member of the Diocesan Council of the Archdiocese of Orthodox Russian churches in Western Europe . Member of the Association of the Turgenev Library [2] .

Recent years

According to the editorial board of the journal “ Vestnik RSHD ”, the overload of a large number of heterogeneous tasks, together with a number of “personal tests” contributed to the deterioration of the health of I.V. Morozov. In 1970, "at the insistence of doctors," he limited his activities to managing publishing and teaching. The editorial obituary indicated that in April 1978 "at the request of friends, he had to move away from the management of the publishing house" [10] [5] [K 1] .

November 6, 1978 I.V. Morozov committed suicide . He was buried in the Russian cemetery of Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois [2] .
