The 1969/70 ABA season was the 3rd season of the American Basketball Association (ABA) , after which the Indiana Pacers team became the first champion . 11 clubs took part in the regular season , which played in the past , but there were some changes in their names, because three of them changed their location, moving to completely different cities. The Auckland Oaks relocated from Auckland , California to Washington , DC , where it became known as the Washington Caps , the Houston Mavericks moved from Houston , Texas to Greensboro , North Carolina , changing its name to Carolina Cougars , and Minnesota Pipers returned to Pittsburgh , PA , regaining the former name Pittsburgh Pipers . Each of the teams held 84 games in the tournament, six more than in the first two.

The regular season started on October 17, 1969, with a match between the Dallas Cheperrels and New Orleans Bakaniers teams, in which the Cheperrels won with a score of 117: 109. On January 24, 1970, the ABA All-Star Game took place at the Fairgrounds Coliseum in Indianapolis , in which the West team outplayed the East team with a score of 128: 98, and the Denver Rockets forward, Spencer Haywood , was recognized the MVP of this game , which took 29 minutes to complete. on the floor, assembled a collection of 23 points, 19 rebounds and 2 assists for the team of the West. The regular season that year ended April 15, the MVP of which was again recognized by Spencer Haywood. Mentors Los Angeles Stars and Denver Rockets , Bill Sherman and Joe Belmont , were recognized as coaches of the year , and the same Spencer Haywood - the rookie of the year . The championship officially ended on May 25 when the Indiana Pacers team outplayed four Los Angeles Stars wins in the sixth match of the final series, and the Pacers striker Roger Brown recognized the MVP playoffs .
