
Baron Strathclyde is a hereditary title created twice in the United Kingdom Peer system . The title was first created on January 15, 1914 for the politician and judge Alexander Jura (1853-1928), who received the title of Baron Strathclyde from Sandyford in Lanark County. He was a member of the House of Commons from Linlithgowshire (1895–1913), served as the General Solicitor of Scotland (1905–1909), Lord Attorney (1903–1913) and Lord Chairman of the Sessional Court (1913–1920). After his death in 1928, the baronial title was interrupted.
The re-title of Baron Strathclyde was created on May 4, 1955 for the Scottish Unionist politician Thomas Dunlop Galbraith (1891-1985). He was a member of the House of Commons from Glasgow Pollock (1940–1955), and served as Under Secretary for Scotland (1945, 1951–1955) and Minister for Scotland (1955–1958). He received the title of Baron Strathclyde from Barskyming in Ayrshire . His eldest son, the Honorable Sir Tam Galbraith (1917–1985), was a member of the House of Commons from Glasgow Hillhead (1948–1982), served as Under Secretary of State for Scotland (1951–1955), Comptroller of the Court (1954–1955), Treasurer of the Court (1955-1957) and the parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Transport (1963-1964).
As of 2014, the title holder was his grandson, Thomas Galloway Dunlop du Roy de Blique Galbraith, 2nd Baron Strathclyde (born 1960), who succeeded his grandfather in 1985 . He was the son of the honorable Sir Thomas Galbraith (1917-1982), the eldest son of the 1st Baron Strathclyde. Lord Strathclyde is one of the ninety elected hereditary peers who remained in the House of Lords following the adoption of the 1999 Act of the House of Lords . 2nd Lord Strathclyde - captain of the honorary corps of gentlemen (1994-1997), leader of the Conservative Party in the House of Lords (1998-2013), leader of the opposition in the House of Lords (1998-2010), leader of the House of Lords (2010-2013), chancellor of the duchy Lancaster (2010-2013).
