History
As a result of the revolution of 1848 in the Austrian Empire , which was directed primarily against monarchist absolutism , one of the directions was also the creation of new administrative bodies, including judicial districts [1] .
Decision to create judicial districts
In connection with the abolition of previous jurisdictions, the commission proposed to make judicial transactions in the newly formed princely courts. The Supreme Court of Innsbruck ( German: Oberlandesgericht Innsbruck ), which was directly subordinate to three regional courts and two Senates, became the court of the highest instance [1] :
- Innsbruck Land Court ( German: Landesgericht Innsbruck ) for Krais Innsbruck ( German: Kreis Innsbruck ),
- The Land Court of Bolzano ( German: Landesgericht Bozen ) for Krais Brixen ( German: Kreis Brixen ),
- Feldkirch Regional Court ( German: Landesgericht Feldkirch ) for Vorarlberg County ( German: Kreis Vorarlberg ),
- Senates of Trento and Roveredo ( German: Senate Trient und Roveredo ) in Krais Trento ( German: Kreis Trient ).
The Regional Courts and Senates included 66 district courts in Tyrol and 6 district courts in Vorarlberg . These 72 jurisdictions formed the lowest level of judicial system on the territory of the Crown Land of Tyrol and Vorarlberg .

Formation of judicial districts
Although Vorarlberg since 1861 has been a “country” with its own Parliament ( German Vorarlberger Landtag ) and the National Committee ( German Vorarlberger Landesausschuss (1861–1918) ), the organization of the courts remained the same, and the Feldkirch Land Court also remained subordinate to the Higher Land Court of Innsbruck . Innsbruck's Supreme Land Court continued even after the dissolution of the Habsburg empire . Also, unlike other federal states , all district courts of Vorarlberg , founded in 1849-1850, remained unchanged until July 1, 2017 [2] . Only the Bregenzervald Judicial District ( German : Gerichtsbezirk Bregenzerwald ) was renamed the Bezau Judicial District ( German Gerichtsbezirk Bezau ).
The judicial districts of Vorarlberg were finally formed in 1868 with the separation of political and judicial power [3] [4] .

Current situation
On September 25, 2015, Austrian Minister of Justice Wolfgang Brandstätter announced that the Montafon District Court would be abolished on January 1, 2017 with the accession to the Bludenz District Court . That is, ten political communities included in the territorial jurisdiction of the Montafon judicial district will become part of the Bludenz judicial district . In previous years, the Austrian Ministry of Justice made repeated attempts to liquidate “unprofitable” judicial districts (the Betsau and Montafon district courts), but they were always stopped because of the continued resistance of the Vorarlberg state authorities [7] . And finally, on Friday, June 30, 2017, “the Montafon District Court was finally closed” [2] .
