The son of Naboo-apla-iddina .
After the death of his father, he shared the kingdom with his brother Marduk-bel-usati . Marduk-zakir-shumi took the north of the country with Babylon , and Marduk-bel-usati went south. However, Marduk-bel-usati in the south entered into an agreement with the Chaldeans and moved with them to Babylon , expelling his brother. Then the Babylonians turned for help to Salmanasar III , king of Assyria . The latter readily moved to Babylon and drove out Marduk-bel-usati, who fled to the mountains. Then Salmanasar moved to Chaldea , destroying the fortresses of the Chaldean princes. The Chaldeans brought tribute . Babylon, Borsippa , Kuta met Salmanasar as a deliverer. The Assyrian king restored the altars defiled by the Chaldeans in these cities and made solemn sacrifices to the gods. However, for this service, Marduk-zakir-shumi was forced to cede significant territories to the Assyrians, and became in fact a vassal of the Assyrian king.
In 827 BC e. When a civil war broke out in Assyria, the candidate for the throne, Shamshi-Adad V, turned to Marduk-zakir-shumi for help. With the help of the Babylonians, Shamshi-Adad V established himself on the Assyrian throne (c. 822 BC ), but was forced to return to Marduk-zakir-shumi the territories taken from him by Salmanasar III . Subsequently, in 819 BC. e. Shamshi-Adad V began military operations against Babylonia and again subjugated the latter to his power. The agreement between Shamshi-Adad and Marduk-zakir-shumi I remained, the text of which has been preserved in extremely fragmentary fashion. From the time of Marduk-zakir-shumi, at least one boundary stone ( kudurra ) was preserved [1] .
