Biography
Elizabeth Truss spent her childhood years in Leeds ( Yorkshire ), her parents adhered to leftist political convictions and involved their young daughter in a campaign for nuclear disarmament . She studied at a public school in Leeds ( Roundhay School ), then studied philosophy, politics and economics at , University of Oxford , where she led the Liberal Democratic Party . Having received a financial education, she worked in the multinational companies Shell and Cable & Wireless.
In 2008, she was appointed deputy director of the Reform analytical center , which developed plans to attract private business in the field of public services [1] .
Political career
In 1996 she joined the Conservative Party , in 1998-2000 she headed the Lewisham Deptford Conservative Association in London. In 2001, she made an unsuccessful attempt to be elected to the House of Commons in County ( ceremonial county of West Yorkshire ), in 2005 she tried again in the same county but in County (and again unsuccessfully). Finally, the May 6, 2010 parliamentary elections brought her success in the constituency county ( Norfolk County) [2] .
In September 2012, Prime Minister David Cameron made 50 new appointments at once in his first cabinet , and Elizabeth Truss then became the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State of the Minister of Education [3] .
On July 15, 2014, Cameron made a new series of staff moves in his office, and one of the new appointments was the promotion of Elizabeth Truss to the post of Minister of Environment, Food and Agriculture [4] .
On May 7, 2015, regular parliamentary elections were held , as a result of which Truss received 50.9% of the vote in the previous district and retained the parliamentary mandate [5] .
On May 11, 2015, David Cameron formed his second cabinet , retaining the position of Minister of the Environment, Food, and Agriculture for Elizabeth Trass [6] .
July 14, 2016 appointed Minister of Justice and Lord Chancellor in the first office of Theresa May [7] .
In April 2017, the Cabinet of Ministers demanded that Theresa May relieve Elizabeth Trass of the duties of Lord Chancellor and separate this post from the post of Minister of Justice due to a series of errors (the posts were joined in 2007 by Tony Blair’s decision) [8] .
On June 11, 2017, she was appointed Chief Secretary of the Treasury in the second cabinet of Theresa May .
On July 24, 2019, during the formation of the cabinet, Boris Johnson was appointed Minister of Foreign Trade and Chairman of the United Kingdom Trade Council.
On September 10, 2019, following the resignation of Amber Rudd , who thus expressed disagreement with government policy, Truss was appointed Minister of Women's Affairs and Equality in addition to her previous posts. Replacing Rudd in the chair of the Minister of Labor, Teresa Coffey, in 2013 voted against the legalization of same-sex marriage , and in connection with the appointment of Truss, the Laborites accused Boris Johnson of the fact that for him the post of Minister for Women's Affairs seems to be a kind of "inconvenience" [9] .
Personal life
Journalists often pay attention to the turn of political convictions that Elizabeth Trass went through - in her youth she participated in demonstrations in Paisley (the family lived in this Scottish city for some time before moving to Leeds) and chanted an anti-Thatcher call: Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, out, out, out ("Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, out, out, out"). The nomination of Elizabeth Truss for the elections to the House of Commons aroused strong opposition at the time from the most conservative opponents of modernization policy David Cameron in the party, whom The Mail on Sunday reporters nicknamed Turnip Taliban, that is, the Taliban of Doodles. At the time she received her first ministerial portfolio in 2014, Truss became the youngest female British minister in history.
In 2000, Elizabeth Trass married financial director Hugh O'Leary, and subsequently two children appeared in the family [10] .
