SquirrelMail is available for any platform that supports PHP (Most commonly used platforms, including Linux , FreeBSD , Mac OS X, and Windows NT server options.

SquirrelMail is a complete web-based email client. Additional features are available in the form of plugins that allow you to add non-standard features, often without the need to change the source code of SquirrelMail. More than 200 third-party plug-ins are available for download on the SquirrelMail website, SquirrelMail itself comes with some set of standard plug-ins:

• check_quota - similar to quota_usage, but more flexible in settings and allows you to use HTML, image or flash to display.
• view_as_html - to quickly switch between HTML and text view of HTML-letters. The option "Show the default HTML version of the message" is added to the appearance settings and the "View as text" / "View as HTML" button when viewing a message.
• spam_buttons - adds the "Spam" / "Not spam" buttons to the list of letters and to view a single message. Allows you to "hang" on them arbitrary functions. It can be integrated, for example, with SpamAssassin .
• Empty Folders - Allows you to empty entire folders.

It is advisable to block access to the src / configtest.php page, as with it, you can find out the settings and version of SquirrelMail. You can enable the hide_sm_attributions option in the configuration file so that the version does not appear on the welcome page.

On June 16, 2009, it was discovered that the squirrelmail.org web server was hacked. According to the developers, the hack did not affect the source codes of the project, which are located on sourceforge.net, however, access to the plugins stored on the hacked server is temporarily closed. On July 31, 2009, a report was published on the results of a hacking investigation: in three additions to SquirrelMail - sasql, multilogin and change_pass - the attackers added a Trojan code, which, among other things, sent user passwords to a specially crafted fake attacker server. The exact time of substitution of the Trojan code is not defined ^[2] .

SquirrelMail is localized in over 40 languages, including Arabic , Chinese , French , German , Spanish , Russian .

There is an error tracking system where users can enter error data and add patches .
