The titular bishop of Crepedula and Coadjutor of Portland from March 4, 1966 to February 18, 1967. The Apostolic Administrator of Portland from February 18, 1967 to September 15, 1969. The Bishop of Portland from September 15, 1969 to April 2, 1974. Archbishop of Newark from April 2, 1974 to June 3, 1986.
