Biography

Born in a family of a Jew and a Catholic. He studied linguistics at Christ Church College, Oxford University , where he graduated and where then he studied until 1939. He served in the army, in particular in intelligence. After demobilization in 1946-51, a French lecturer at the University of Glasgow . In 1951-1960 he was a professor of French in Ireland and Newcastle (the latter at the Royal College of Durham University , until 1963).

Since 1963, the director of the university center, in 1973-1980 - professor at the University of Sussex then emerit .

In 1986-1989, he was a visiting professor at King's College London.

He was elected a member of the British Academy on the recommendation of Isaiah Berlin .

Died of heart disease.
