Biography
He was the writing editor for Linux.com , and his articles were published on Datamation , LWN.net , the Linux Developer Network, and LinuxPlanet , and he wrote more than 1,200 articles in total. He also runs a monthly blog for the Linux Journal website, which describes popular free software such as LibreOffice and Scribus . In March 2004, his article “11 Tips for Moving to OpenOffice.org ” was on the front page of the magazine. He also runs a weekly blog about free software and related topics for Linux Magazine . In addition to online publications, he has published in Maximum Linux , Ubuntu User, and New Internationalist magazines, and maintains a command line column for Linux Magazine . His personal blog, Off the Wall , is a collection of short personal essays.
Before becoming a journalist, Byfield was Director of Marketing and Communications at Progeny Linux Systems and Product Manager for Stormix Technologies . He also designs e-learning courses and is a marketing and communications consultant.
Byfield lives in Burnaby , British Columbia . In addition to free and open source software, his interests include parrots, running, science fiction, collecting Indian art, punk folk music and leadership issues [1] . He is co-founder of the Mature Student Award at the Freda Dizing School of Native American Art, Northwest Community College [2] , and is currently a member of the board of the YVR Art Foundation [3] .
