Shokaku Okamura called it “a classic book that Zen students are still studying” [5] . Reb Anderson called it “an outstanding peak in the mountain range of Zen literature, a calm stream in the valley of learning, a treasure of the house (Zen), inspiring and directing to study Buddhist teachings” [6] . Harry Shinshin Vick, who published the translation of the book in 2005, said: “Although it was written by a Soto-shu master, cases from it are used as koans in the Rinzai line, but some schools in the Soto and Rinzai line read it simply as a good book, not used as koans ” [7] .
