Before being elected to the Senate, Schumer represented parts of Brooklyn and Queens (at the beginning it was the 16th, then the 10th, and then the 9th arrondissement) in the House of Representatives from 1981 to 1999. A native of Brooklyn , a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Law School , he also represented the 45th district in the New York State Assembly from 1975 to 1980.
Schumer is the first influential member of the Democratic leadership of the Senate since January 3, 2017, after Harry Reid’s retirement. [one]
In 2015, the retiring majority leader Harry Reid supported Schumer for the majority (or minority) leader position [2] .

Youth and Education
Schumer was born in Brooklyn to a family of Jews Selma and Abraham Sumer [3] [4] . He is a relative of actress and comedian Amy Schumer [5] [6] [7] . He attended James Madison High School in Brooklyn , where he received an incredible 1600 points for the SAT exam [8] .
He studied at Harvard College , where he became interested in politics and participated in the election campaign of Eugene McCarthy [9] . After receiving a bachelor's degree, Schumer enrolled at Harvard Law School , which he graduated with honors, receiving a degree (JD). He passed the exam at the New York State Bar, but never practiced law starting a political career [10] .
