Prior Events
The previous governor of the region, Konstantin Ilkovsky, was appointed acting governor on March 1, 2013 upon the expiration of the term of office of Ravil Geniatulin . [2] September 8, 2013 Ilkovsky won the election of the governor of the Trans-Baikal Territory, gaining 71.63% of the vote. [3] [4]
February 17, 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin accepted the resignation of Ilkovsky at his own request. [5] Ilkovsky attributed his resignation to criticism from "government leaders." [6] Natalya Zhdanova , who previously held the post of chairperson of the Legislative Assembly of the Trans-Baikal Territory, was appointed Acting Governor until the early elections. [7]

Nomination and registration of candidates
In the Trans-Baikal Territory, candidates are nominated only by political parties that have the right to participate in elections in accordance with federal laws. Self nominations are not allowed.
Each candidate must submit a list of three people during registration, one of whom, if elected, will become a senator in the Federation Council from the regional government.
Municipal filter
In the Trans-Baikal Territory, candidates must collect signatures of 8% of municipal deputies and heads of municipalities. Among them must be signatures of deputies of district and city councils and (or) heads of districts and city districts in the amount of 8% of their total number. In this case, signatures must be obtained in at least three quarters of districts and urban districts . According to the election commission, each candidate must collect from 347 to 364 signatures of deputies of all levels and heads of municipalities, of which from 48 to 50 are deputies of district councils and councils of urban districts and heads of districts and urban districts of not less than 27 districts and urban districts of the region.
