Biography

Born into a family of economists working at an aircraft factory. From 1949 to 1953 he studied at the Moscow Art School . One year he studied at the Belarusian Theater and Art Institute in Minsk , another year - at the Academy of Arts. I.E. Repin in Leningrad , was expelled. He completed his education at the staging department at the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinema . Pupil N.P. Akimova .

The first apartment exhibition of Oleg Tselkov in Moscow was held in 1956 by the efforts of Vladimir Slepyan .

In 1961 he moved to Moscow.

The first official solo exhibition was held in 1965 at the Institute of Atomic Physics. Kurchatov in Moscow. Since the 1970s, exhibited in Europe and the United States.

Beginning in 1960, from the painting “Portrait,” over the next forty years in painting, he developed the only plot — images of a deformed human face and figures resembling sinister masks or a humanoid mutant. His portraits were a kind of reaction to new formal methods of severe style. A special feature of his paintings is “stereotyped”, large scale and bright aniline colors. The work was influenced by modern primitivists and the late Malevich .

In 1977, at the “suggestion” of the authorities, he left the USSR. Lives in Paris. He did not accept French citizenship ; for almost four decades he remained stateless . In June 2015, he was accepted into the citizenship of the Russian Federation [1] .

In 2004, 2 solo exhibitions were held: in the Russian Museum [2] and in the State Tretyakov Gallery . [3]

In 2005, Oleg Nikolayevich Tselkov became the only artist living in the West to be awarded the Russian Triumph Prize.

In 2010, at a joint exhibition with three other luminaries of nonconformism, Oleg Tselkov’s exhibition in the Ekaterina fund featured authorial ceramics and bronze, recognizable Tselkov figures and heads [4] .

In the summer of 2014, the Catherine Fund hosted the big anniversary exhibition of Oleg Tselkov “Ace of diamonds”.

His characters <...> remain a mystery. They are impenetrable, like sculptures in which the sculptor seems ready to wake up. One of his works is called “Sculptor and Sculpture”. In the foreground is a huge mysterious face looking at us from stone. The master’s chisel is attached to its crown, but the sculptor’s face is in the background, small, almost disappearing. Oddly, creation is larger than man himself.

- review of the critic Zhanna Vasilyeva in "RG" [5]

The sculptural experiments of Oleg Tselkov are presented on the website of the Saatchi Gallery and on the website of long-time admirer of talent Tselkov, collector Igor Tsukanov .
