Gitapriya

Gitapriya , nee Lakshman Rao Mohite ( Cannon ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣರಾವ್ ಮೋಹಿತೆ , English Lakshman Rao Mohite ; June 15, 1932 - January 17, 2016 ) is an Indian film director and songwriter who worked in the Kannada film industry. He shot about 30 films and wrote over 250 songs. His debut film was awarded the National Film Award of India .

Biography

He was born under the name Lakshman Rao Mohite on June 15, 1932. His father served in the Mysore cavalry regiment, which was stationed in Bangalore [1] . The mother tongue of his mother was Marathi . The poet , who lived near the Mohite family, and his poetry had a strong influence on the boy. Even in high school, he began to write poems and short stories and send them to various magazines [2] .

In his student years, Gitapriya met the future composer and director M. B. Singh, with whom he was engaged in theatrical productions. After studying to help his family financially, he got a job at a restaurant for 35 rupees a month. But Vijaya Bhaskar persistently encouraged him to join the film industry with them, promising to pay 40 rupees, and Gitapriya eventually agreed [2] . He made his film debut as a songwriter, writing the lyrics of two songs for the film Sri Rama Pooja (1955) [3] .

Like many filmmakers of that time, Gitapriya moved to Madras , where, in addition to songs, he began to write dialogues for films. Here he met the cinema star on Kannada Rajkumar , who, having heard the plot he had once invented, suggested that Gitaprii take the film with him in the title role. It took the future director a year to finish the script, and then it took some more time to get the money for the production [2] . As a result, Mannina Maga was released in 1968. Rental lasted more than 100 days. The film also won the National Film Award for Best Kannada Film [4] , and the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Screenplay.

His next film was Kadina Rahasya (1969), the first film about Tarzan on Kannada [5] . Other directors of Gitapriya include the films Yaava Janmada Maithri (1972), Beluvalada Madilalli (1975), Besuge (1976), Hombisilu (1978), Putani Agent 123 (1979) and Mouna Geethe (1985). In total, the director shot 31 films, including three in Tulu and Anmol Sitaare in Hindi [1] [6] . His last film, Shravana Sambhrama, was released in 2003.

The director was awarded the [7] , Sandesha Award [8] and Saroja Devi Award [9] for his contribution to cinema in Kannada.
