History
The idea of erecting a monument to Alexander Popov, a Russian physicist and inventor of radio, was put forward by S. I. Kuzyaev (former director of the Perm branch of Uralsvyazinform), L. I. Kvyatkovsky (president of the Regional Public Organization “Union of Telecommunications Operators” of the Perm Territory) and Yu N. Schebetkov (Head of the Department of Roskomnadzor in the Perm Territory) in 2009, the year of the 150th anniversary of A. S. Popov, although already in 2007 the possibility of allocating space for the monument was being explored. At first, it was planned to install only a bust of Popov, but then they leaned towards the idea of erecting a large monument.
A competition for a sketch of the monument was announced. Two projects of Perm sculptors: Alexei Zalazayev and Alexey Matveev, reached the final of the competition. The winner was the project of a young sculptor Aleksey Matveev with co-author - artist Igor Dymshakov. The architects of the monument were Dmitry Lapshin and Ekaterina Koltsova. The project was approved in January 2010.
The monument was financed by donations from Perm and Perm Territory communications enterprises, as well as private funds. Due to organizational and financial problems, the production of the monument was delayed, and even after casting in bronze, the monument was stored in the warehouse for more than a year.
The grand opening of the monument took place on June 11, 2013 on the eve of City Day. About 300 people took part in the event: sculptors, employees of Perm communication operators, students of the Perm Radio Engineering College , representatives of the authorities of the Perm Territory and Perm. The Governor of the Perm Territory Viktor Basargin said a welcoming speech.
The monument depicts a young Alexander Popov with books in his hand - the way he was at the age of 18-20 while studying at the Perm Theological Seminary . To create this image, the authors of the monument used the photographs of Popov available at the Regional Museum, and they also had to tailor the seminar form of those times on purpose. Popov was offered to immortalize the young because by this time in St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg there were already monuments to Popov, depicting him in adulthood.
The sculptural composition consists of three parts. In the center is a statue of Alexander Popov, mounted on a pedestal made of red granite. To the right and to the left of the figure of Popov are the receiver and transmitter, created according to real samples. Near the monument stone scrolls are installed with brief information about the inventor and the organizations thanks to which the monument was created. The height of the monument is about 5 meters, weight is 700-800 kg, and the weight of the pedestal is 5-6 tons. The inscription on the front of the pedestal reads:
Alexander Stepanovich
POPOV
Radio inventor
On the reverse side of the monument, it is indicated that it was created in the period 2008-2013, and the names of its authors are listed.
