History

The prize awarded since 2006 to the winner of the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix race is a statuette of the Montjuic TV Tower .

The first Spanish Grand Prix was held in 1913 , on a highway in Guadarrama , near Madrid .

After a break in 1914 - 1922, due to financial problems, the Spanish Grand Prix was renewed. The race was held in Sitges , near Barcelona , and then from 1924 to 1935 the race was held on the Lasarte highway, on the north coast ( San Sebastian Grand Prix). In 1936, a civil war broke out in Spain , and the race ceased.

Spain returned to the race calendar in 1951 when the Spanish Grand Prix was held, which is part of the official standings of the Formula 1 championship on the Pedralbes circuit. In 1954 , another Spanish Grand Prix was held. But in 1955 there was a tragedy with the death of spectators at the 24-hour Le Mans race , after which the Pedralbes street track was excluded from the calendar.

In 1967, the Spanish Grand Prix returned when the Royal Automobile Club of Spain organized a race on the Jaram highway near Madrid . Since the 1968 season, the Spanish Grand Prix has returned to the championship calendar, alternately being held on the tracks of Jarama and Montjuic Park in Barcelona . However, the 1975 race at Montjuic Park ended in the death of 4 spectators. After that, in 1976 - 1981, the race took place on the Haram highway.

In 1982 - 1985, the Spanish Grand Prix fell out of the calendar. In 1985, the mayor of Jerez launched a new route to attract tourists. The Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez was held from 1985 to 1990 , in addition, the 1994 European Grand Prix and the 1997 European Grand Prix were held on the track in Jerez.

Since the 1991 season, the Spanish Grand Prix has been held on the Catalunya circuit, located near Barcelona .
