Boris Gardiner ( born Boris Gardiner ; January 13, 1943 , Kingston , Jamaica ) is a Jamaican singer , songwriter and bass player [1] .

Biography

Boris Gardiner was born on January 13, 1943 in Kingston on the island of Jamaica .

He studied at the local Franklin Town Government School and St Monica's College , but drops out after he has been diagnosed with tachycardia [2] .

In 1960, the 17-year-old Gardiner began his musical career as a singer of The Rhythm Aces [2] [3] . Together they recorded three singles: Angela , A Thousand Teardrops and The Meaning Of Christmas .

Boris later joined Kes Chin & The Souvenirs as a singer and percussionist.

In 1964, he became a regular member of the Afro Jamaican Rhythm band, where he learned to play the bass and began to compose music.

In 1967, Gardiner returned to Jamaica and created his own group - The Broncos at the Jamaican club The Bronco Club . Later - at the Courtleigh Manor hotel where the group changed its name to The Boris Gardiner Happening . And after about two years - at The Hotel Kingston .

In 1960-1970, he worked actively as a session musician [4] .

In the late 1960s, along with other Jamaican musicians, he performed with The Upsetters .

In 1968 he became bass player with Clement Dodd (Sir Coxsson) on Studio One and played bass parts in hits of many artists: The Heptones , Marcia Griffiths , Junior Murvin and others [5] .

In 1972, The Boris Gardiner Happening went on a tour of Jamaica and abroad. They traveled to Germany, Belize, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and the USA.

In 1973 Boris wrote the music for the film Every Nigger Is a Star (Every Negro - star). The film is considered a failure, but the soundtrack is still appreciated among collectors and contemporary artists.

In 2015, the song Every Nigger Is a Star came into the title track of the album Wesley's Theory To Pimp a Butterfly Kendrick Lamar , nominated as "Album of the Year" at the "Grammy in 2016" .

Personal life

Boris Gardiner was twice married and has three children: Evigail, Oliver and Karu.
