Thorny ( Latin Eurylaimidae ) or broad-billed - family of birds from the order of passerine , allocated in a separate suborder. Divided into eight genera and fourteen species. Hornbills live in tropical forests and forest regions of Africa , South and Southeast Asia . Their size ranges from 14 to 28 cm. These are small birds with a strong, thick beak , short legs and a tail. In most species, the tail is rounded. The only exception is the long-tailed wide bill ( Psarisomus dalhousiae ). They tend to have a variegated plumage, and there are differences in appearance between the sexes. Food mainly consists of fruits , seeds , insects and other invertebrates . The hornbill nests resemble a pear and hang above the water, attached to the branches of trees. Unlike the other passerbids, which have 14 cervical vertebrae, their horned-billed ones are 15. Moreover, they have unique [ what? ] tendons on paws.
