Biography

Sam Carr (née Shmil Kogan) was born in Tomashpol (now an urban-type settlement in the Vinnitsa region of Ukraine ) in 1906 . In 1924 he immigrated to Canada, lived in Winnipeg and Regine , in 1925 he settled in Montreal [1] . Carr became the organizer of the Communist Youth League of Canada, together with Fred Rose [1] .

In 1931, Carr was arrested along with several other leaders of the Communist Party and spent 30 months in prison at Kingston Prison. After his release from prison, in 1935 , he organized a march to Ottawa [2] .

Carr was the editor of the Communist Party newspaper, Clarion , until the Communist Party was again outlawed in 1940 and he and other party leaders had to flee to the United States . In 1942 , after the Soviet Union became an ally of Canada in the war as a result of the German invasion of the USSR , party leaders who went underground, such as Sam Carr and Timothy Buck , surrendered to the authorities and, after ten days of imprisonment, were released under the promise of refraining from communist activities. In 1943, Sam Carr became the organizer of the Workers Progressive Party - the legal party of the Canadian Communists [1] [2] .

In 1946 , after Igor Guzenko fled to Ottawa, a warrant was issued to arrest Carr, and Carr again fled to the United States . The Royal Espionage Commission has begun investigating his activities. In 1949, he was convicted of conspiracy to obtain a fake passport and was imprisoned for seven years. Then he moved to Poland [1] . Carr was one of the main spy recruiters for the USSR in Canada [1] .

After his release from prison, Carr was no longer a member of the Communist Party, but became an activist in the left progressive organization United Jewish Peoples' Order (UJPO) and was a member of it until his death in 1989 . He wrote for UJPO magazine under the pseudonym George Lewis.
