History

The title of Baron Delamer was created on July 17, 1821 for Thomas Chamley (1767-1855), a former deputy of the House of Commons from Cheshire (1796-1801, 1801-1812). The branch of the Chamley family from Vail Royal comes from Thomas Chamley (d. 1653), the younger brother of Robert Chamley, 1st Earl of Leinster (1584–1659), and Hugh Chumley (1591–1665), the ancestor of the Marques of Chamley . The first baron was succeeded by his son, Hugh Chamley, 2nd Baron Delamer (1811-1887). He previously sat in the House of Commons from Denbyshire (1840–1841) and Montgomery (1841–1847) from the Tory Party. His eldest son and namesake, Hugh Chumley, 3rd Baron Delamer (1870-1931), emigrated to Kenya , where he acquired a large property. The eldest son of the 3rd Baron, Thomas Pitt Hamilton Chamley, 4th Baron Delamer (1900-1979), inherited his paternal title in 1931. In 1934, he tried to secure the return of his family residence in the Vail Royal Abbey, but he was turned into a sanatorium during the war. When the family residence was sold in 1947, the 4th Baron Delamer returned to Kenya.
