The title of Baronet Bampfield from Poltimore in the county of Devonshire in the Baronet of England was created on July 14, 1641 for Sir John Bampfield (c. 1610-1650), a descendant of the 1st Baron Poltimore. He represented Penrin in the House of Commons of England (1640). His son, Sir Komplston Bampfield, 2nd Baronet (c. 1633–1692), sat in the House of Commons from Tiverton (1659) and Devon (1671–1679, 1685–1689). On April 7, 1823, a jealous husband shot his pistol, his wife working in Bampfield's house, Lord Poltimore, died 12 days later. He was succeeded by his son, the aforementioned George Bampfield, the 6th Baronet (1786-1858), who in 1831 was elevated to the rank of peer .
