Baron Strateden and Campbell

Baron the Suitter from Kupar in Fife County and Baron Campbell from St. Andrews in Fife County - a double hereditary title in the peer system of the United Kingdom . Titles were created on January 22, 1836 and June 30, 1841, respectively. The title of Baron Strathdeten was created for the Honorable Mary, Lady Campbell (1796–1860), the wife of the famous lawyer and Whig politician, Sir John Campbell (1779–1861), and the daughter of James Scarlett, 1st Baron Abinger (1769–1844). Sir John Campbell was three times a member of the House of Commons from Stafford (1830–1832), Dudley (1832–1834) and Edinburgh (1834–1841), and also held the posts of Solicitor General (1832–1834) and Attorney General (1834, 1835–1841 ). He twice unsuccessfully claimed the post of chief of judicial archives and was about to resign from the government of Lord Melbourne . Nevertheless, he was dissuaded from resigning, and in recognition of his merits, his spouse was elevated to the rank of peer. In 1841, John Campbell himself received the title of Baron Campbell and was appointed Lord Chancellor of Ireland . Later, he served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1846–1850), Lord Chief Justice (1850–1859) and Lord Chancellor (1859–1861).
