Biography
In 1955 he graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the Ural University (Ural State University). From 1963 to 2006 he worked at the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature (later Russian Literature) of the Ural University (Assistant, Associate Professor , Professor): 1975 - 1977 , 1979 - 1993 , 1999 - 2006 - Head of the Department of Russian Literature. From 1974 to 1977 and from 1983 to 1988, Dean of the Faculty of Philology of the USU. 1993–1999 - Head of the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature at the University of Chelyabinsk .
G. K. Shchennikov is one of the largest scholars in the works of F. M. Dostoevsky . Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences G. M. Friedlander believed that his monograph “Dostoevsky and Russian Realism” “can rightfully be ranked among the highest achievements of the Soviet historical and literary science of the 80s as a whole”. In the 1990s. G. K. Shchennikov organizes a wide group of Russian scientists working on the Dostoevsky and Russian Culture problem. The result of this work was the book "Dostoevsky's Creativity: the Art of Synthesis" (1991), two issues of the collective monograph "Dostoevsky and National Culture" (1994-1996) and the large dictionary reference book "Dostoevsky: Aesthetics and Poetics" (Chelyabinsk, 1997) - 240 articles, in which 37 authors from various universities of the country participated. G. K. Shchennikov was also the editor of the collection “Russian Literature of the 1870–1890s”. Under his leadership, began the publication of the complete works of D. D. Mamin-Sibiryak .
Under his leadership, written 13 master's and 5 doctoral theses. Full member of Peter the Great Academy of Sciences and Arts . He was awarded several medals, the Honorary Badge of the Ministry of Education of the RSFSR.
