Biography

Mark Geisel was born in 1909 in Mogilev . In 1924 he moved to Leningrad [1] . He graduated from high school, then studied at the cinema department of the Higher Courses of Art Studies at the Institute of Art History . During his studies, he began his literary work. He published his works in the magazine "Boiling Water", an appendix to the " Krasnaya Gazeta " [2] . Since 1927 - a permanent employee of the children's newspaper " Lenin Sparks " [3] . In this edition, he led the satirical “newspaper in the newspaper” - “Baklazhka”. In 1938 he joined the CPSU [1] .

He participated in the Soviet-Finnish war [4] . After the start of World War II, he volunteered for the army. He was sent to Tallinn as a military commander in the newspaper " Red Baltic Fleet " [2] . He died on August 28, 1941 on the steamboat “Krishjanis Valdemaras” together with the newspaper’s editorial staff during the transition of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet squadron from Tallinn to the Leningrad seaport of Kronstadt (sunk by German aircraft) [4] . On the same ship, another Leningrad writer Yuri Inge was killed. January 23, 1963, on the 20th anniversary of the lifting of the siege of Leningrad , Geisel was posthumously admitted to the Union of Writers of the USSR [1] .
