History
The early years
The club was founded in 1970 , but the first success came to the team in 1998 , after winning the Royal Hoar Cup, after which the club ended up in the First Division of Thailand . In the 2002/03 season, the club took third place in this tournament. In a butt match for entering the Thai Premier League, the team lost to the Thai Tobacco Monopoly with a score of 0: 1. A year later, taking second place, the team entered the elite division. Following the results of its first season in the Premier League, the team took second place, having received the right to participate in the Asian Champions League . However, in the end, the club was disqualified [1] . In the next two seasons, in 2006 and 2007, PEA finished only at 10 and 8 places, respectively.
In the past, the club did not have a permanent home stadium, but because of the change of cities - and a large number of fans. However, the club gradually settled in Ayutthaya . In the 2008 season, the team significantly increased the number of fans from among the residents of this city. One of the notable events during that season was the victory over the current champions of Thailand, Chonburi , which eventually allowed the PEA to become the country's champions for the first time in its history.
First major successes
Season 2009
Before the start of the 2009 season, disagreements arose between the fans and their club. The former wanted the club to change its name to Ayutthaya . Victory in the championship gave the right to participate in the AFC Champions League qualifying tournament. This was probably the final reason why the club was not renamed Ayutthaya. As a result, the club remained in Ayutthaya, and the stadium was reconstructed. In addition, the club has a new anthem. Also, the club began to call itself not in the full name “FC Provincial Electric Power Administration”, but simply FC PEA.
To qualify for the group stage of the 2009 AFC Champions League , PEA met with FC Armed Forces of Singapore . Already in the 6th minute the score was 1-0. After the “Armed forces” equalized in the 29th minute, the game went into Extra time. As a result, the PEA lost with a score of 1-4. Due to the defeat, the club was qualified only for the AFC Cup 2009 . There he met at the group stage with Valencia , Home United , Binhsiong . Until the last moment, the club continued to claim the exit to the next round, but for this it was necessary to win the last match of the group. In the match against Home United they lost 1–3 and flew out of the tournament. PEA also had problems in the league. After the summer break, the club took only 12th place and was in danger of relegation. In May 2009, long-time coach Prapol Ponpanich was relieved of his duties. After poor results in the first half of the season, fan pressure has become too much. Tonsuk Sampahansit became the successor to Ponpanich as head coach. The club finished the 2009 season in ninth place.
Buriram and Nevin Chidchob
Season 2010—2011
In December 2009, it was announced that a politician living in Buriram , Nevin Chidchob, was buying a club. He had previously tried unsuccessfully to buy the TOT and the Royal Thai Army clubs. Nevin Chidchob moved the club to Buriram and gave it the name Buriram PEA. Pongpan Wongsuvan agreed to become a coach . Since 1998, he has been the head coach of FC TOT . As a new star of the team, a short time later, Succao Nuchnum was bought. Succao had played under the leadership of Pongpan in TOT for five years.
In 2010, Buriram signed Attafol Buspakoma , a former Muangtong United coach. That season, he led Burirams to second place in the Thailand Championship 2010 .
At the beginning of the 2011 season, the club bought the Africans Frank Ohands , Frank Achimpong , Ekval Herman , Clarence Bitang and Florent Obama . Equalla Herman and Florent Obama became defense players, while Frank Ohandza and Frank Achimpong became players of the Buriram attack. The team bought Thai players such as Rangsan Vivatchaychok , Jakkrafan Kauprom , Tiraton Bunmatan , Sivarak Tedsunyon . With just one defeat, they became champions at the end of the season. The 2011 season was completed by Buriram with a golden hat-trick: the Thai Premier League, the Thai Cup and the Thai League Cup. Frank Ohandza became the league's top scorer, scoring 19 goals. Having won the league, Buriram PEA ended up in the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2012 .
Season 2012
After winning the Thai League Cup 2011, the club played a match with the Vegalta Sendai team as part of the Toyota Premier Cup at Suphachalasai Stadium before the start of the season. Buriram won on a penalty 5-3, ending the match with a score of 1-1, winning the cup.
At the beginning of the 2012 season, the club was renamed FC Buriram United. At the group stage in the AFC Champions League 2012 , in the first official match of the club, Buriram defeated the J-League champion 2011 , Kashiva Reisol , with a score of 3-2 and became the first club from Southeast Asia and Thailand to win over the J-League club after the introduction of the AFC Champions League in 2003. In the second match, Buriram played away against the Chinese champion , Guangzhou Evergrand . Buriram also became the first club from Southeast Asia and Thailand to defeat the Chinese club in China after defeating Guangzhou 1-2 at the Tianhe Stadium , with goals scored by Succao Nuchnum and Frank Achimpong . That match ended the win-win series of "Guangzhou" at home, which lasted 2 years. However, Buriram United lost in the four remaining matches against the 2011 K-League champion Chonbuk Hyundai Motors at home and away, Kashiwa Reisol and Guangzhou Evergrand, and finished last in the group.
For a season and a half, Buriram has signed contracts with the Thai-American San Jose Earthquakes player Anthony Ampitapakwong , the Esteglal French player Goran Erkovich , the Spanish Racing player Osmar Barba , to help the team win the two remaining trophies, the Cup Of Thailand and the Thai League Cup . They ultimately won the Thailand Cup and entered the AFC Champions League playoff round 2013 . At the end of the season, Buriram also retained the Thai League Cup. In 2012, the club took fourth place in the national championship.
Season 2013
Before the start of the season, he signed a contract with goalkeeper coach Mikel Towson. Because of their performance in friendly matches, Igor Burzanovich , Lee Sang-Min , Ariel Santana and Cesar Elisondo terminated the contracts with Buriram United. Before the start of the season, Buriram rented a Chilean Union Espanyola player, Ramses Bustos, and a Swiss-Thai-Lao player from Yverdon , Chitanok Xaisensurinton . They also signed contracts with Spaniard Carmelo González from Sporting Gijon , Spanish Rayo Vallecano player Juan Cuero , Filipino-Spanish footballer Javier Patinho from Cordoba , Japanese player Kai Hirano from Catalle Toyama , South Korean player Hanu Jae from Incheon United , a Thai-Swiss player Charil Chappuis , and a Thai-German player Dennis Buschening . The contract of Ramses Bustos was terminated in connection with his discipline.
On May 1, 2013, Buriram United became the first Thai club in ten years to reach the AFC Champions League playoffs thanks to a dramatic 2-2 draw from FC Seoul , ending up in the 1/8 finals and changing coach to Scott Cooper. . They also continued on their way to the quarterfinals of the AFC Champions League 2013 with a score of 2-1, defeating the Uzbek club Bunyodkor in the sum of two matches. However, in the quarter-finals they lost to the Esteglal club, having lost by a score of 1-3 in the sum of two matches.
