The Philological Society (" Society of Classical Philology and Pedagogy ") has been operating in St. Petersburg since 1874 . The initiative of the institution belonged to A. I. Georgievsky , who was until 1896 and its chairman.
The press organ of the Society until 1897 was the Department of Classical Philology of the Journal of the Ministry of Education , and after 1897, the Moscow journal Philological Review .
The company also undertook separate publications:
- "Doctrinae metricae summarium" - the work of Kiev professor Dellen (St. Petersburg, 1876)
- “Commentary on the composition of Cicero Cato maior” by Odessa professor Yermil Chekhovsky (St. Petersburg, 1885)
- translation with additions and corrections of the “ Real Dictionary of Classical Antiquities ” by F. Lubker (St. Petersburg, 1885)
Of the provincial branches of society that existed in Moscow , Kharkov and Kiev , only the latter survived, and eventually became an independent society.
