Naplanum

Naplanum (Na-ap-la-nu-um) - the leader of one of the Amorite tribes (possibly the Amnanum tribe), ruled around 2026 - 2005 BC. e.

In the list of kings of Lars compiled during the reign of the Babylonian king Hammurabi , Naplanum is presented as the founder of the dynasty and the first king of the city of Lars , located in the city of Uruk . A simple calculation by the years of the reign of the kings of Lars given by this list indicates that Naplanum was a contemporary of the king of the III dynasty of Ur Ibbi-Suen . However, in Lars, not a single monument was found confirming the stay of Naplanum in this city. It is also known that the king of Ur continued to rule in Lars and maintain his temples (data on the distribution of cattle to the Shamash temple in this city were preserved), while Naplanum seemed to begin to rule there. According to one version, Naplanum was a simple royal official, who was in the service of Ibbi-Suen and, for some reason, was on the list of kings of Lars. Or he was the ancestor of the later kings of Lars, from whom they traced their origin. In Lars itself, he never ruled and, in fact, only his descendants took possession of this city. It is possible that Naplanum, as the leader of a cattle-breeding tribe, captured only pastures in a number of eastern nomes of the Mesopotamia and, probably, Lagash was under his control, and possibly some of the cities listed as dead in the Cry for the Death of Ur : Ummah , Larak , maybe cache . In fairness, it should be noted that in none of his own inscriptions, not one of the later kings of Lars mentions Naplanum as his ancestor.

The name Naplanum is found in several economic texts compiled in the last years of the reign of the III dynasty of Ur. In them, he is often called the word “martu,” that is, Amorite. His sales of large quantities of grain were noted during the famine on the eve of the fall of Ur. It is possible that this merchant and leader of the Amorite tribe Naplanum is one and the same person. The wealth accumulated in speculation with grain could contribute to the descendants of Naplanum in the foundation of his own kingdom.

According to the list of kings Lars, Naplanum ruled for 21 years.
