Vatican Museums

Vatican Museums ( Italian: Musei Vaticani ) - a complex of museums located in the Vatican City . Their collections were created by the popes and contain the artworks of classical masters, including works of the Renaissance .

Museums were founded by Pope Julius II at the beginning of the 16th century. The route through the Vatican Museums includes the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings and stanza decorated by Raphael . In 2013, the Vatican Museums was visited by 5.5 million people, which put them in fifth place among the most visited museums [1] .

Museums have 54 galleries, or halls, among which the Sistine Chapel is the last.

The history of the Vatican Museum collection begins with a marble sculpture of Laocoon and his sons , found on January 14, 1506 in the vineyards of Esquiline . Pope Julius II , learning about the find, immediately sent for it the architect Giuliano da Sangallo and the sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti . Sangalo confirmed the authenticity of the work, and Michelangelo recommended purchasing it from the owner. Julius II installed it for public access in a special niche in the Vatican Belvedere exactly one month after discovery.

Picture Galleries

Vatican Pinacotheca - a collection of paintings. Until 1932, paintings were located in Borgia Apartments [2] . The collection includes such famous works as the triptych of Stefaneschi Giotto ; “Madonna di Foligno”, “Transfiguration”, “ Coronation of Mary ” by Raphael; "St. Jerome " Leonardo da Vinci ; "Position in the grave" by Caravaggio ; “Madonna and Child with Saints” and “Resurrection” by Perugino ; "The Wedding of Our Lady" Lippi .

In 1973, a collection of contemporary religious art was opened to the public.

Sculpture Museums

The sculptures are on display at the museums surrounding the Belvedere Palace: Pius Clementine Museum, Chiaramonti Museum , Etruscan and Egyptian museums.

History Museum

In 1973, the History Museum was opened. His collection contains vehicles, household items, photographs, documents and other exhibits illustrating the centuries-old history of the Vatican and the popes.
