Biography
The son of a historian, a professor at the Academy of Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the CPSU, G. D. Kostomarov (1896–1970) [3] .
He graduated from the Russian Department of the Philological Faculty of Moscow State University (1952, external), the English Department of the Translation Department of the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages. M. Torez (1953) and the graduate school of the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences . Classmate of Academician Yu. D. Apresyan .
Candidate of Philological Sciences (1955, thesis "Word Formation of Russian Verbs with Infinitive into -bit). Member of the CPSU since 1958. He worked as a translator, then a teacher and head of the department of Russian language HPS at the Central Committee of the CPSU ; in 1964–1966 - Head of the Speech Culture Sector at the Institute of the Russian Language, USSR Academy of Sciences . Since 1966 - Director of the Scientific and Methodological Center of the Russian Language at Moscow State University. M. V. Lomonosov .
Varlam Shalamov [4] , Chingiz Huseynov [5] , Alexander Ginzburg [6] , as well as the editor and publisher of the journal Syntax , widow of the writer Andrei Sinyavsky Maria Rozanova, claim that Kostomarov, along with other leading Soviet linguists, participated in the trial of Andrei Sinyavsky and Julius Daniel as an expert on stylistics [7] . In 1969, at the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University, he defended his doctoral thesis “Some features of the press language as a means of mass communication. On the material of the modern Russian newspaper.

One of the students and followers of Academician Viktor Vladimirovich Vinogradov . He also worked under the guidance of L. S. Barkhudarov and E. M. Galkina-Fedoruk . In collaboration with E. M. Vereshchagin, he studied the connections of language and culture, substantiated a special scientific direction - linguistic and cultural studies (books “Language and Culture”, published in six editions, “Linguistic and Cultural Theory of the Word”, etc.).
