Biography

Jaw of a megalosaurus. Illustration from an article by W. Buckland (1824)

He studied in theology at the University of Oxford , was engaged in the natural sciences. In 1813 he was invited to the newly opened Department of Mineralogy , with which he combined geology.

In his essay “Geology and mineralogy in relation to natural history” ( English Geology and mineralogy considered with reference to natural theology ), published in the supplemented and revised edition in 1864 by Richard Owen , Buckland tried to bring plutonic doctrine into possible agreement with biblical narratives . In 1845, he was appointed Westminster Dean.

Buckland entered the history of science by describing and naming the first open species of dinosaurs - the megalosaurus . In 1815, he bought the fossils found near Oxford, but he could not determine which animal they belonged to, until in 1818, Georges Cuvier , who visited him, suggested that these were the remains of a giant predatory lizard. In 1824, Buckland acquired the remains and presented them to the Royal Society, describing them as a new genus called the megalosaurus ( Latin Megalosaurus - “the great lizard”).

Buckland died in Clapham , near London.

The eldest of Buckland’s sons, Francis Buckland (December 17, 1826 - December 19, 1880) - regimental doctor of the English guard, author of the works “Natural Science Curiosities” ( English Curiosities of natural history , L. , 1858), “The Public History of British Fish” Familiar history of British fishes , 1873) and other popular natural history writings, which provided great services to fish farming in England. He founded at his own expense the Museum of Economic Fish Culture in London.
