Position before the tournament
Initially, the UFC had planned to hold a tournament in New York in the Madison Square Garden arena [2] . However, on January 25, it became known that the preliminary claim for permission to hold the tournament in New York was rejected by a federal judge. According to the ruling of Judge Kimba M. Wood, a federal court will not make decisions limited by state law, according to which mixed martial arts are still banned in New York [3] . February 6 it became known that the tournament will be held in Las Vegas , Nevada [1] .
The main event will be the fight for the UFC light heavyweight champion title, between Daniel Cormier and former title holder John Jones [1] . The fighters have already met earlier at UFC 182, and then Jones won a unanimous decision [4] . At UFC 187, Jones was supposed to defend his title against Anthony Johnson , however, on April 28, it became known that Jones was deprived of the title and suspended from speaking because of problems with the law [5] . Cormier replaced Jones in that fight and became the new UFC light heavyweight champion.
Demetrius Johnson will defend his UFC lightweight champion title against Olympic freestyle wrestling champion Henry Sehudo [1] .
In January 2016 , BJ Penn announced his intention to return to mixed martial arts and win the belt in the semi-lightweight category [6] . As expected, he will hold his first fight after eighteen months break at this event [7] .
