Mid-Eastern Athletic Basketball Player of the Year

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year is the annual basketball award awarded to the best basketball player among students of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference , part of the 1st Division of the NCAA , which is held among the head coaches of the teams included in the conference. In addition, coaches cast their votes after the end of the regular season , but before the start of the playoffs, that is, in early March, and they cannot vote for their own wards. The award was established and first presented to Elmer Austin of the A&T University of North Carolina in the 1971/72 season.

The first mention of the desire to create another new conference was made public in 1969, which was confirmed the following year. The conference itself officially began its activities in 1971, and then it included only seven student teams. Over time, with the formation of new universities, the number of teams in the conference increased to thirteen (there are eleven at the moment), with four teams leaving the University of Maryland , the University of Maryland East Coast , the University of Florida A&M and Central University of North Carolina her and then came back.

Seven players, Marvin Webster , James Ratiff , Joe Binion , Larry Stewart , Stephen Stewart , Damian Woolfolk and Jasha Blunt , received this award several times, and Webster and Binion received it already three times. Only one player, James Sparrow , became a prize winner as a freshman. More often than others, A&T basketball players from the University of North Carolina (9 times), Coppins University of Maryland (7 times), Morgan State University of Maryland and Howard University (6 times each) became winners of the trophy.
