The 2nd Virginia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment was one of the cavalry regiments of the Confederate Army during the US Civil War . The regiment went through all the battles in the east from the first battle at Bull Run to surrender at Appomattox .

Formation
The regiment was formed in Lynchburg as the “30th Volunteer Regiment” and was led by a West Point graduate, Colonel Richard Radford. Another West Point graduate , Thomas Manford, became a lieutenant colonel. The regiment companies were recruited in the districts of Elbemerl , Amherst, Appomattox , Bedford, Botetot , Campbell and Franklin.

Battle Path
In May 1861, separate companies of the regiment began arriving in northern Virginia, at Manassas and Milford Mills. Company K arrived on May 11, company C and D arrived on May 22, and later in June, companies E, F, G, H, and I. From Milfird Mills, the companies dispersed throughout the region, providing reconnaissance and protection. On June 17, due to the offensive of the federal army, companies B, C, G and H were assigned to Manasas, to the Mitchell-Ford crossings across the Bull Run River.
By the time the first battle of Bull Run began, the regiment was called the "30th Virgin", numbered 676 people, and its companies were distributed among separate infantry brigades. Companies A and I were assigned to the 7th Brigade, companies B and D were assigned to the 5th Brigade, companies C and G were assigned to the 1st Brigade, company E was assigned to the 4th Brigade at Yulackburns Ford, company F was assigned to the 2nd Brigade , Roa H was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, and Company K was held in reserve at Camp Wigfall. After the battle, Lt. Col. Manford participated in the pursuit of the enemy.
Summer and autumn, the regiment stood at Fairfax and Centerville. In October, he was renamed the 2nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment.
