Creation History
As the composer himself recalled, the concept of the opera was born in the summer of 1950, when he reread the story of A. M. Gorky's “ Mother ”. “... Revolutionary pathos,” wrote Khrennikov, “combines in Gorky’s work with a deep penetration into the caches of the human soul ... The image of Nilovna immediately entered my mind” [1] .
Directly to work on the opera, he could begin only in 1953. The playwright Alexei Fayko wrote a libretto , close to the story of Gorky [1] ; a trip to the place of events, to Gorky , where the composer met the wife of Pyotr Zalomov - the prototype of the image of Pavel Vlasov, met with the participants of the first t - shirts - the old Bolsheviks, helped him more deeply imbued with the atmosphere of the story, "feel the intonation of the working square dance," which entered the picture of the t- shirt [1 ] . From the songs that the workers sang at their gatherings on the eve of the 1905 revolution , there was a melody of the choir "Bright Holiday" in the same picture [1] . In the music of the opera, Khrennikov used intonations and rhythms and widely known revolutionary songs - “Feel free to keep up”, “ Varshavyanka ” and “ Marseillaise ” [2] . At the same time, as the critic noted, Khrennikov, by the nature of his talent, was more likely a lyricist, revealing the pathos of the revolutionary struggle through the inner world, the spiritual movements of a simple Russian woman: the heroic theme organically developed inside the opera’s lyric dramatic art [3] .
The premiere of the opera, completed in 1956, took place in Moscow, at the Bolshoi Theater, on October 26, 1957, under the direction of Boris Khaikin [1] .
