Biography
Born in a working class family. Member of the RSDLP (b) since 1913. In the same year he entered the teacher's seminary in Goldingen , finished it in 1917 in the evacuation in Chistopol . He worked as a teacher of the school of metalworkers of the PLO plant in Kostroma , from July 1918 - head of the school department of the Yaroslavl city and district education department, since December of the same year - editor of the Latvian newspaper Kommunist and member of the Northern Regional Bureau of the Latvian Section of the RCP (b) . In the spring of 1919, he worked in the People's Commissariat of Industry of Soviet Latvia in Riga , from June again in the Yaroslavl provincial department of national education, in the fall he was drafted into the Red Army , serving in the Ukraine in the 2nd special army, from February 1921, in charge of the Voronezh regional department public education.
After demobilization in the same year, he entered the biological-geographical department of the pedagogical faculty of the Yaroslavl University and, having finished it in 1924, became the head of the economic geography department of the reorganized Yaroslavl Pedagogical Institute . In 1929 he was appointed rector and head of the department of geography of the Tver Pedagogical Institute .
Since 1931 - Professor of the Faculty of Geography and Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of Moscow University (from May to November 1934, he served as director ). Since 1940 - Doctor of Geographical Sciences (thesis topic: "University geography in Russia: from the time of Peter the Great to the bourgeois reforms of the 1860s."). In 1941 he was evacuated to Tashkent . In 1944–1949 - rector of the University of Latvia . Since 1947 - Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR .
