Members of this organization advocate the abolition of the death penalty in Libya and other countries. With the outbreak of the Libyan civil war, LLHR issued a series of statements condemning the actions of the government of Muammar Gaddafi , in particular the use of force against demonstrators, rape, torture and abduction of opposition representatives. This organization played an important role in the decision of the UN Human Rights Council to suspend Libya's membership, which was an important step towards the UN Security Council decision on sanctions against Libya.
