Halibut [1] ( lat. Hippoglossus ) is a genus of ray-finned fish from the family of flatfish (Pleuronectidae). Bottom predatory fish that live in the temperate waters of the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. They are found at a depth of up to 2000 m. The elongated body of halibuts is covered with medium-sized rounded scales , each scale is surrounded by a ring of small additional scales. The eyes are located on the right side of the body. The pectoral fin on the ocular side of the body is larger than the fin on the blind side. Large and sharp teeth are directed back. Caudal fin with two small notches. The lateral line above the pectoral fin forms an arc. They reach a length of 470 cm and a mass of 363 kg. Propagate by spawning. Fertility is up to 4 million eggs. The diet consists of fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. Valuable fishing facility [2] [3] [4] . The name of the genus and one of the species comes from the words dr. Greek. ίππος - "horse" and others. Greek. γλώσσος - "language" and is associated with the body shape of these fish.
