He received his Ph.D. at the University of Cologne in 1966 and there he habilitated in 1969.
Since 1973 professor of ancient Greek and Latin languages, since 1984 professor of ancient Greek. literature, simultaneously in 1982-88. Chairman of the Harvard Classics Department.
