The Peabody Museum of Salem is an American museum in Salem , Massachusetts , which existed from 1915 to 1992. In 1992, it was merged with the Essex Institute and transformed into the Peabody Museum in Essex .

History
The Peabody Academy of Science Academy , the successor to the East India Marine Society (established in 1799), was founded in 1868. The Academy contained a museum in which exhibits in the form of animals, plants, and minerals were presented, as well as ethnographic materials such as weapons, costumes, figurines, and musical instruments. [1] In 1915, the academy became the Peabody Museum in Salem.
As of 1949, the museum had three large sections: ethnography, maritime history, and natural history. The exhibits of the museum were presented by distant Marquesas Islands and New Zealand. The museum collection was in the hall of the East India Marine Hall , expanded in 1953 through the Crowninshield Galleries gallery.
In 1984, the Museum of the China Trade Museum in ( Massachusetts ), merged with the Salem Museum Peabody. In 1992, the Museum of Salem merged with the Essex Institute , which resulted in the creation of the Peabody Museum in Essex . [2]
The East India Marine Hall in 1965 was declared a National Historic Landmark and in 1966 was included in the National Register of Historic Places of the USA . [3] [4]
