Szilard Crater ( lat. Szilard ) - a large ancient impact crater in the northern hemisphere of the far side of the moon . The name was given in honor of the American physicist Leo Szilard (1898-1964) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1970. The formation of the crater dates back to the preectarian period [1] .

Crater Description
The immediate neighbors of the crater are the Giordano Bruno Crater and, beyond it, the huge Harkebi Crater in the northwest; Somner Crater in the northeast; Harriot crater in the east; Seyfert Crater in the southeast; Espin crater in the south-southeast; Artamonov crater in the south-south-west and Richardson crater in the south-west. To the northeast of the crater is the Somner crater chain ; in the south - a chain of Artamonov craters [3] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 127.2 km [4] , depth 2.9 km [1] .
Szilard crater has a polygonal shape and is significantly destroyed over a long time of its existence. The shaft is flattened and covered by many small craters, the southeastern part of the shaft is blocked by the satellite crater Szilard H. The bottom of the bowl is crossed by a light beam from the Giordano Bruno crater, somewhat crossed in the western part and more even in the eastern, marked by several small bowl-shaped craters.
Before receiving its own name in 1970, the crater was temporarily designated “Crater 116”.
