Story
, a member of the Coast Guard station team on Cape Cod , falls in love with a local girl, Miriam Pentinen. The lovers plan to get married on April 16, but according to the Coast Guard instructions, Bernie must get permission from the station's commander, . On the day that Bernie is about to ask for permission, he is sent at the helm of a CG 36500 boat ( Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat CG 36500 ) to rescue the Pendleton oil tanker , which had collapsed in half from the Norister storm off the coast of Chatham. Bernie takes Andrew Fitzgerald, Erwin Maske and Richard Livesey with him.
When Miriam finds out about this, she, like all other residents of the town, considers the rescue operation a suicide. Some locals believe that Commander Kluff is not local and does not know about the features of dangerous weather. Miriam goes to the station to convince Cluff to call Bernie and get him back. Cluff refuses and rudely orders to expel Miriam from the station.
Bernie steers the CG 36500 boat toward a wrecked tanker despite losing a compass along the way. Despite the fact that the boat is designed for 12 people, Bernie manages to save 32 people. Trusting his instincts and knowledge of the coast in the absence of a compass, he turns the boat CG 36500 towards the house. The task becomes difficult when Chatham is left without electricity. However, Miriam and other residents of the city bring their cars to the pier and turn on their headlights.
