Biography

Born November 20, 1924 in the village of Akhieli (now Georgia ) [5] . Shortly before the war, he moved to Tbilisi with his family, where he graduated from high school [7] . In 1945 he entered the Tbilisi Academy of Arts . He studied with S. Ya. Kakabadze and in the workshop of Ya. I. Nikoladze [5] . After graduating from the Academy of Arts in 1951, he worked on the construction of a sanatorium of the Ministry of Coal Industry in Tskhaltubo . In 1951-1952 - sculptor-designer at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in Moscow [8] . Since 1953 he participated in art exhibitions [4] , in the same year he became a member of the USSR Union of Artists [7] .

He was known as a sculptor who revived the ancient Georgian art of coinage for metal [7] . For greater expressiveness, he brought to this art various tinting techniques and scratched free drawings [5] . The last 20 years of his life did not engage in coinage, devoting himself to other types of sculpture and painting [7] .

Artwork

Ochiauri created portraits of Y. Nikoladze (1953), 3. Nizharadze (1960), spouses (1962), students (1967), Vazha Pshavela (1973) [4] . Among his other works are the Samaia plate (copper, 1962, Georgia Art Gallery, Tbilisi), reliefs for the Wedding Palace (Tbilisi, 1964), minted plates in the building of the Georgian Soviet Encyclopedia (Tbilisi), the Abduction of the Sun panel for the USSR pavilion at the World Exhibition in Osaka (copper, 1970, USSR Ministry of Culture, Moscow) [5] . Ochiauri is the author of the monumental compositions “The Sea” (Pitsunda, 1970), “Vazha Pshavela” (Tbilisi, 1973), “Victory, Thanks Mother” (Tbilisi, 1981) [4] .

Awards and Prizes

  • USSR State Prize (1971) - for minted plates in the Wedding Palace and in the building of the Georgian Soviet Encyclopedia in Tbilisi; hammered panel “Abduction of the Sun” at the Expo-70 World Exhibition in Osaka and hammered plates from the “Song of Georgia” series
  • State Prize of the Georgian SSR named after Shota Rustaveli
  • Honored Artist of the Georgian SSR (1965)
