Manpura Island is located east of Bhola Island (the largest island of Bangladesh) and west of Hatia Island (the 2nd largest island of the country). It is approximately 22 km long and 5 km wide; has an average height of about 2 m above sea level. According to 2010, the island’s area is 114 km², but it is rapidly decreasing due to erosion (the northern coast is particularly susceptible to it). Thus, for the period from 1973 to 2010, the area of Manpura decreased by 37 km², from 148 km² to 114 km² [2] . The area, together with the neighboring small islands, is 373 km² (the area of the sub-district of Manpur).

In November 1970, the island suffered greatly from the tropical cyclone Bhola [3] .
