The son of Gig III de Foret and his wife Alix de Sully. Inherited to his father in 1204. Until adulthood, he was under the tutelage of his uncle, the archbishop of Lyon Renault II de Foret.
With the permission and approval of King Philip Augustus in 1205/1206, Gig, who was then no more than 10 years old, was engaged to Philippe (d. 1218), daughter of Guy II de Dampier-Bourbon . The wedding took place approx. 1214 They had two children:
- Gig V (d. 1259), Count of Foret in 1241-1259
- Renault (d. 1270), Count of Foret in 1259-1270.
Widowed, Gig IV married Ermengard (d. 1225), daughter of Count Auvergne Guy II . Perhaps the aforementioned Renault is the son from her.
And, finally, by his third marriage (1226) he was married to Matilda de Courtenay - Countess Nevers, Oxer and Tanner, widow of Herve IV, Senor de Donzi . Some historical sources say that they did not have children. In others, the daughter is indicated:
- Arthode, married to Artaud IV of Roussillon.
In 1239, Gig IV took part in the “Crusade of the Barons” as part of the army of Thibault Champagne . On the way back he died in Puglia. He was buried in the cathedral of Montbrison, built with his funds in 1223.
Do not confuse Gigue IV d'Albon, Count Foret with Gigue IV d' Albon , Count of Vienne (d. 1142).
